SURGICAL OUTCOMES Information Exchange (SOIX) can
provide ambulatory surgical centers worldwide
with comparisons on key performance indicators
maintained and reported by surgery centers across
the United States.
SOIX maintains a database relative to outcomes on
high volume ambulatory surgical procedures performed
throughout America. The comparison of performance
is done across "procedure groups"
that combine procedures using similar techniques and
having similar expectations in outcomes.
SOIX developed the benchmarking "procedure
groups" using the American
Medical Association's (AMA) CPT (Current
Procedural Terminology) codes.
By benchmarking outcomes in specific procedure
groups, participating members of SOIX are assured
the best basis for realistic comparisons. Terminology
and/or procedure codes or classifications used in
other countries can be converted into the appropriate
SOIX assigned procedure group in order to enable
comparisons of outcomes in ambulatory surgery centers
in foreign countries to those of surgery centers in
the U.S.
Patient-level data is submitted to SOIX via a web-based
program in a simple and secure way. The data is then
analyzed and compared (i.e. benchmarked) to
U.S. averages on a procedure-specific basis. Facilities
worldwide may use their benchmarking results to
identify areas where outcomes in ambulatory surgery
either exceed the average, or show opportunities for
improvement.
SOIX has met the criteria for inclusion in The
Joint Commission's accreditation process and is
committed to meeting future criteria established by
The Joint Commission* and the U.S. Centers
for Medicare & Medicaid Services**
