OUTCOMES RESEARCH DIVISION

The long-term strategy for the company is a solid business in program evaluation for systematic collection, analysis, and reporting of information to determine a program's performance. Managed care companies and pharmaceutical companies require outcome research to demonstrate the value of their services and products. Chironet, LLC believes its software can be used to provide fast, easy outcomes research to a variety of entities. The company has signed a agreement with COVANCE Health Economics to provide such services for their clients on a project-by-project basis.

Such investigations can help improve patient care and outcomes, detect and remedy problematic processes of care, examine post-marketing use and effectiveness of pharmaceuticals and devices, and document and improve cost-effectiveness of care. The OMS™ has the flexibility and immediacy to allow investigation of complex processes and outcomes of care in a wide variety of settings, using both experimental and non-experimental study designs.

Because the OMS™ can collect data simultaneously from geographically dispersed sites, it is ideal for investigations involving outcomes of office- or clinic-based primary and specialty care, or treatment and procedures conducted at clinics and surgery centers. Because data collection and transmission are automated, OMS™ does not require on-site data collection by study personnel, or burdensome data collection forms to be completed by clinical staff. The ability to modify OMS™ data collection forms and protocols electronically allows outcomes studies to incorporate the most recent data collection tools, and even to modify them as new research questions arise.

The OMS™ can be used for both rigorous experimental studies or for observational studies. In experimental settings, OMS™ allows strict criteria for inclusion of either certain types of providers or specific types of patients, and randomization can be made at the facility or patient level, depending on the research question. For non-experimental studies, the ability to collect rich facility- and patient-level data allows analytic adjustment for important co-variables.
Examples of investigations for which OMS™ is well suited include:

  • Clinical trials of new post-operative pain control medications
  • Post-marketing analysis of lipid control using newly marketing cholesterol-lowering medications
  • Identification of determinants of patient satisfaction with outpatient surgical procedures
  • Influence of surgical procedures on long-term health status and quality of life

In a rapidly evolving health care environment, results of outcomes studies must be timely in order to influence patient care and outcomes. OMS™ collects data in near-real time, enabling analysis and reporting of findings while they are relevant to clinicians, industry, and researchers
